The text below is a letter sent to the local newspapers. We may disagree with Stephen Phillips QC MP on most things, but not on help for unaccompanied refugee children. His is working with, and supporting, Yvette Cooper. Credit where credit is due.
Sharp eyed readers of the will have noticed local MP Stephen Phillps' uncredited appearance on the television news. His image accompanied the story of the government's decision to take in unaccompanied refugee children and featured Labour's Yvette Cooper.
The Sleaford and North Hykeham Labour Party argued that Britain can, should, and its people willing, to share the burden of giving refuge to those fleeing from war and oppression. We wrote to Stephen last year urging that sanctuary be given to the refugees and asylum seekers from the Middle East looking for a safe haven within the EU. Over the past weeks we noted Stephen Phillips impassioned speeches urging his government to reverse its obscene policy of refusing help to unaccompanied child refugees in Europe. Thankfully that policy is now changed, those children will now find shelter in Britain.
While there are very many areas difference between the Sleaford and North Hykeham MP and Labour, we welcome the co-operation with Yvette Cooper. We see this as a sign of the the “new politics”, a rejection of tribal politics. We hope that Stephen's work on the refugee crisis sets an example to local councillors, particularly those on North Kesteven district.
