The Constituency Party sent a letter to the leader of North Kesteven council urging the council to declare the district willing to take in refugees. The letter reads as follows:
"Dear Cllr. Mrs Brighton
NORTH KESTEVEN – A HUMANITARIAN COUNCIL
A photograph of a dead three year old boy has alerted the world to the plight of four million Syrian refugees. Across North Kesteven, as across our country and indeed continent, ordinary citizens are appalled at the suffering of those forced to flee their own war-torn land.
The response of many residents is that we must do something. That is why British people are donating to aid charities, and why collection points for clothing and other essential items are springing up in the towns and villages of Lincolnshire. And it is why our district council can play a significant role in leading that response.
This is the opportunity for North Kesteven to show that it truly is a humanitarian council. A number of local authorities have already come forward with offers to house refugees from the Syrian conflict; Sleaford and North Hykeham Labour Party calls on this council to add its name to the list.
Taking positive action to house refugees is the morally right thing to do and it will also demonstrate community leadership. Instead of waiting for central government diktat, the council would be proud to show that it has taken the initiative of its own accord.
I appreciate that the council will want to consider what resources it has at its disposal, and will need to make a realistic judgment on what number of families it can offer to house in the first instance. I hope that number will be as high as reasonably possible, it is estimated that North Kesteven's proportionate share of all refugees entering Europe this year is just 35 people. I hope the council would regard this as a minimum number.
I look forward to your response to this proposal. Should, as I hope, that response prove positive, I can assure you of the Labour Party’s support for meaningful action in this time of crisis.
Sleaford & North Hykeham Labour Party"
